Charms are little trinkets that remind us of special or unusual occasions.
Instrumentally speaking, this is a "small" piece-- just violin, viola, and cello.

When I was looking for a title, I was looking for things that came in sets of three. A violist friend came up with "three is a charm", and that seemed like just what this piece is: it's a trio that reminds me of a time and a place and the experiences that happened in that time and place and the emotions I was feeling in that time and place.

The music isn't necessarily supposed to be "read" as a document about me, or about anything, really. There is a quote from another composer who I studied with while I wrote this piece, a very, very respected composer who made an impression on me as both a man sitting there in front of me and a master of his craft with a wide reputation.

He's in this piece, and so is my teacher David, and so are the other people I met while at California Summer Music 2012.
